In the 1950s Toyobo began serious microbiological research because a way to treat waste water from a plant that processed pulp for rayon manufacture was urgently needed. Our scientists discovered a yeast that consumed the sugar in the waste water and this substantially reduced the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). After the process, the yeast was filtered out and marketed as animal food. Furthermore, the proportion of nucleic acids in the yeast was found to be extremely high and easily extracted. After considerable research, a product emerged that could be used in food seasoning.
● Yeast Fermenter (1950s)
In the 1960s, based on its world-wide success in the commercialization of uricase from Candida sp, Toyobo turned its attention to research in clinical chemistry. Toyobo now markets 60 kinds of enzymes and diagnostic reagents. As with all its products, these reagents are of the finest quality available.
Toyobo entered the molecular biology business in the 1970s. Company products in this area include various kinds of restriction endonucleases and modifying enzymes that have been derived from the remarkable technology the company developed in fermentation and purification over the previous decades.
In 1997, the Quality Management System of the Tsuruga Bio Plant and the Tsuruga Institute of Biotechnology was approved in the US, Germany, Holland, Australia and Japan by the Lloyd's Register of Quality Assurance Limited (LRGA) as meeting the requirements of ISO9001 as applicable to the development and manufacture of enzymes. Toyobo also carry out R&D; and manufacture according to the environmental management system as followed in the Toyobo Tsuruga plant and certified in 1999 by JAB and JIC as meeting the requirements of ISO 14001.
